My must watch list
The Brutalist, 2024
Directed by Brady Corbet
Written by Brady Corbet and Mona Fastvold
Starring Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones and Guy Pearce
A Very Memorable Soundtrack by Daniel Blumberg
“We were literally wedging screws, clips, and objects into the piano strings to create percussive sounds to invoke the sounds of construction”
The Brutalist felt like a love letter to every design fan. The references to Marcel Breuer and Bauhaus School of Design sparked a lot of creativity as well as nostalgia of my experiences as an industrial design student.
Even though the movie was shot on 35 mm, it was also transferred to 70 mm. At KINO, Rotterdam such experience is available along with the possibility of seeing the physical film and talking to film projectionists after the screening.
Alpha., 2024
Directed by Jan-Willem van Ewijk
Written by Jan-Willem van Ewijk
Starring Reinout Scholten van Aschat and Gijs Scholten van Aschat
A film that I accidentally yet luckily watched without English subtitles. The movie is set in Swiss Alps but is spoken in Dutch, English and German. Every shot in the movie was carefully considered and felt like a breathtaking photo from a gallery exhibition with a witty dialogue. A beautiful cinema experience with a definite re-watch value.
The soundtrack made me think of Koyaanisqatsi and felt very monumental.
Merging Bodies, 2024
Directed by Adrian Paci
A hypnotic experience of an aluminium transformation plant. An astonishing short film from “Tiger short competition” at this year’s International Film Festival in Rotterdam, that explores the plant machinery and its relationship with the workers. The camera work and repetitive sequences felt very contemplative yet intriguing. The environment, noise and worker attire give a sci-fi/fiction movie feeling.
